Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney said his nation are capable of lifting the World Cup trophy in Germany, BBC reported on Friday.

"We have a lot of good players in the squad and we will be disappointed if we don't come back with the World Cup," Rooney said.

"We have a good chance. We have a lot of experienced players and a lot of young players as well," he added.

Rooney's first appearance in a major international tournament came in Euro 2004 in Portugal where he produced a sparkling form and netted four goals before being limped off in the quarter-final against the hosts through injury.

The 20-year-old's comments came following the WC trophy's arrival in London as part of a tour that takes in 31 cities in 28 countries.

"Some of the greatest footballers ever have lifted this trophy so it was an awesome feeling to get up close to it. The boys will do everything they can to make sure we see it back here," he said.

"Over the last year we have been playing well and hopefully we can take that into the World Cup finals and come back as winners," he added.

England were drawn in Group B of the WC along with Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay and Sweden.

The WC kicks-off on the ninth of June and ends in July ninth.
