Italian side AS Roma defeated Manchester United 2-1 on Wednesday in the quarter-finals first leg of the UEFA Champions League.

The English leaders had to play with only 10 men on the field as captain Paul Scholes was sent off at the 34th minute after making two rash challenges against Philippe Mexes and Francesco Totti.

It was all what the Romans need as they punished the Reds 10 minutes later when Mancini passed the ball to Rodrigo Taddei, in front of goal, to open the score on a deflected shot.

Wayne Rooney was able to level the score at the 60th minute after chesting down a cross from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It’s his first goal in the Champions League since his hat-trick against Fenerbahce in 2004.

But six minutes later substitute Mirko Vucinic scored the winner after sliding in a badly punched ball from keeper Edwin Van Der Saar.

The next leg will be held Tuesday at Old Trafford. Simone Perrotta from Roma and Paul Scholes from Man Utd will miss the next match after receiving an automatic ban.
