Chelsea have offered Spanish champions Real Madrid an enormous sum of 70 million euros ($108 million) for defender Sergio Ramos, daily newspaper El Mundo reported Wednesday.
The Spanish paper claimed that Real Madrid were actually considering the Chelsea offer, which if accepted, would make Ramos the most expensive defender in history.
The 22-year-old Spanish international has been pivotal for Real Madrid since joining them from Sevilla in 2005, but the magnitude of the offer could make him a very dispensable asset.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is said to be a keen admirer of the attack-minded defender.
The Blues are struggling to find a reliable right-back and midfielder Michael Essien was called upon several times this season to fill in the void despite the presence of Paulo Ferreira and Belletti.
