Terry saved the day for England

England beat Ukraine 2-1 in the World Cup qualifier played at Wembley on Wednesday.

Fabio Capello's men broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Peter Crouch volleyed John Terry's header in the back of the net from close range.

AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko came on as a second-half substitute to equalize for his country in the 74th minute after taking advantage of a lose ball in the England box.

Terry turned from provider to scorer two minutes from time when he converted Steven Gerrard's flick from a pinpoint David Beckham free-kick.

The win makes it five wins from five games for the Three Lions, who are top of Group 6 with 15 points. Ukraine are second on ten.

In Paris, Franck Ribery was once again the saviour for France, as his second-half strike secured Les Blues' 1-0 win over Lithuania.

The Bayern Munich man was also the scorer against Lithuania in France's 1-0 win in Vilnius on Saturday.

Raymond Domenech's team are now second in Group 7 with ten points, two less than leaders Serbia.

Elsewhere, Holland thrashed Macedonia 4-0 to stay top of Group 9 with 15 points.

Dirk Kuyt scored a brace for the Dutch on 16 and 41 minutes, as goals from Real Madrid duo Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart sealed the big win.
