Chelsea and Portugal full-back Jose Bosingwa will not play at the World Cup as he will undergo a new knee surgery that will rule him out for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old underwent a knee surgery after sustaining the injury against Aston Villa in October last year but will need another one to fully recover.

"Bosingwa will be out for the season and have another operation, so that's him unfortunately, and he'll miss the World Cup as well," Chelsea assistant coach Ray Wilkins said on the club's official website.

Serbian Branislav Ivanovic has been deputizing for Bosingwa since the former Porto man picked up the injury.

Chelsea, who are bidding to win the Premier League and the European Champions League, will have to do without Bosingwa during the remainder of the campaign.

Portugal will also miss him during the World Cup finals in South Africa in June.
