Emad Meteb is unlikely to walk away unpunished after his surprise departure from Standard Liege, according to a Belgian lawyer representing the club.

After signing a two-year deal in Belgium, the Egypt striker returned home without the consent of his new club, while intending to rescind his contract for an unknown reason.

Even though he began working on a plan to avoid the inevitable FIFA sanction, Meteb has been warned about the ramifications of his sudden exit.

"Standard will be entitled to get compensation equal to the player's gross profit for the next two years, plus interest," lawyer Luc Misson told HLN tv.

"Moreover, FIFA might suspend the player if Standard requested. The minimum is four months.

"But in this case, where there is absolutely nothing against the club, the suspension could be much longer."

Meteb, who has yet to comment on his act, has been lambasted by Belgian and Egyptian media alike after he failed to make a move to Europe for the second time.

Two seasons ago, the 27-year-old returned home to represent Ahli in a Super Cup match a few days after signing for English side Bristol City, who eventually called off the deal.
