"Nesta has had surgery on his right arm after fracturing the fourth metacarpal in a friendly match against Juventus in the Tim Trophy, it was a complete success and he should be available for the opening day of the championship," a club statement said.

Nesta has been wretched by a series of injury problems in recent years, most notably a back problem which saw him miss the whole 2008-2009 season.

Milan open their Italian Serie A season against Lecce on August 29th.
