Ahmed Elmohamady’s Sunderland snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw with Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday, thanks to an injury-time strike from Asamoah Gyan.

The Ghanaian claimed the vital goal four minutes into stoppage after goalkeeper Steve Harper’s save ricocheted off him into the net.

Newcastle’s goal was scored by skipper Kevin Nolan, who netted a hat-trick against the Black Cats in the 5-1 drubbing last October.

Egypt wing-back Elmohamady started the game for Sunderland and was substituted five minutes before his side’s last-gasp equalizer.

The on-loan ENPPI man suffered a head injury during the game but was able to shake it off and resume playing.

Sunderland remain sixth on 34 points, five more than ninth-placed Newcastle, who have a game in hand.

Steve Bruce’s men travel to Blackpool next weekend.
