Mido has been suffering from persistent injury problems which forced him to pull out of Egypt's squad for the African Cup of Nations.

The 24-year-old put in a fine display after being introduced from the beginning by Middlesbrough coach Gareth Southgate. He was voted man of the match by Boro website.

Mido's compatriot Mohamed Shawky did not take part in the game despite being available after contributing to Egypt's Nations Cup triumph.

Sheffield keeper Paddy Kenny had to be on alert to deny Mido's brilliant overhead kick in the second-half.

However, it was Sheffield who had the upper hand throughout the game. James Beattie's free-kick in the first-half's additional time was denied by the post.
