Mido was introduced as a second-half substitute instead of Brazilian striker Afonso Alves in Boro's Premiership clash against Liverpool at Anfield Road.

The 25-year-old's superb long-range drive gave Middlesbrough the lead nine minutes past the hour mark.

"It was a great finish, he had a good impact on the game," Southgate was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

A deflected effort from Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard's wonderful strike in the dying seconds turned the tables on Boro.

Southgate saluted the efforts of Mido, who said recently that Wigan Athletic are interested in signing him on a season-long loan.

"He gave them problems in the air and we were able to play through them."

"I am delighted for him, he worked his socks off in the summer and it shows the importance of a strong squad."

Mido also scored in Middlesbrough's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in their Premiership opener.
