The Record Breaker
Winning the Czech Player of the Year award for a record three years in a row is adequate proof that Petr Cech is the Czechs' most valuable player.
The talismanic guardian holds more than one record to his name, as he is the only Premiership goalkeeper not to concede a goal in a total of 1,025 minutes.
He also holds the league's record of 25 clean sheets won in a single season, when he helped the Blues clinch the title in his first campaign in 2004-2005.
International Career
Cech's early talents emerged in 2002, when he led the U-21 team to win the European championship in Switzerland, where he was a penalty shootout hero in the final against France.
From that date, Cech is Karel Bruckner's undisputed number one in the senior team.
The 26-year-old played all matches in the EURO 2004, where he won the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award, and the 2006 World Cup.
He almost played every game of the qualifying campaign, only missing the last couple of games due to a head injury.
Club Career
Cech started out as a midfielder/striker for the youth team of his hometown club FC Viktoria Plzen until he broke his leg at the age of 10. After the incident he preferred to play in goal.
Cech's made his senior level debut at the age of 17 with Blasny in 1999 and after just two seasons he moved to powerhouses Sparta Prague with whom he had his first taste of European football.
A move abroad was imminent for the talented custodian and it was Stade Rennes that landed him.
Italian coach Claudio Ranieri lured Cech to Stamford Bridge just before he left Chelsea in the summer of 2004.
The Czech international held on to the opportunity with both hands and instead of being Carlo Cudicini's understudy he became Chelsea's undisputed goalkeeper.
With Chelsea, Cech won a host of local titles and was named European Goalkeeper of the Year in 2005 and 2007.
Qualities
Cech provides relief to his defense with his physical presence and superb reflexes. Despite the fact that he is 197cm tall, the giant Czech has agility and technique.
He is very calm and has a lot of charisma and a strong sense of leadership that make him a world class goalkeeper.
