Euro Round-up: Save of the Euros!

0 Bookmark and Share Share

Player of the day: Gritty Karagounis

After missing a crucial penalty in the opener against Poland, Greece captain Girogos Karagounis has surely made amends with his decisive winner in Russia’s net.

Goal of the day: Jiarcek vs. Poland

Czech Republic completed a wonderful counter attack to down hosts Poland, with midfielder Petr Jiracek applying the finishing touch clinically.

Moment of the day: Ignashevitch assist!

Greece hardly had a shot on target before scoring that killer goal that sent them through to the knockouts, but the Greeks must thank Russia defender Sergei Ignashevitch for a horrendous piece of defending that gifted goalscorer Karagounis the ball.

Save of the day: Save of the Euros!

This is arguably the best save of the tournament and it didn’t come from a goalkeeper!

In the fourth minute of injury time, Czech defender Michal Kadlec made a heroic last-man saving header to deny Poland a goal that could have saved the hosts’ blushes and sent the Czechs out in Russia’s favor.

Miss of the day: Lewandowski

One on one with the keeper and Robert Lewandowski could only slice the ball wide; not the finish you expect from the Bundesliga Player of the Season.

Manager decision: Greece’s three-man attack with defensive duties

Greece boss Fernando Santos started with three attackers in Fanis Gekas, Girogos Samaras and Dimitrios Salpingidis for the first time, while handing the latter duo defensive duties.

The strategy demonstrated a clever approach from the Portuguese coach as his side deservedly went through.

Referee error: No penalty and yellow card

Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson decided to book Greece’s Karagounis, reject a big penalty appeal and deprive the Greeks of their captain in the quarter-finals for alleged simulation.

Karagounis went mad and had the right to be as replays showed the ref was absolutely wrong.

Quote of the day: Greek masters

“In the second half against a team like Greece, it was hard to play. They were leading at half-time and they are just masters at doing what they did today.” Russia manager Advocaat admits defeat to the Greeks.
